Microsoft is launching a preview version of its new OneDrive for Business sync client for the Mac. The new version adds a number of new features and improvements for businesses who want to access Microsoft’s cloud storage service.

One of the new features is called Selective Sync. Microsoft says:

”Selective sync is a key feature in the new client (and your most requested one), allowing you to choose which folders to sync to your device. Better yet, it’s specific to each of your devices so that you can optimize based on how you use each device and its local storage constraints.”

Some of the other improvements in the new sync client include increasing the individual file size limit from 2GB to 10GB and eliminating the 20,000-file sync limit. Microsoft has a sign-up page for businesses who want to check out the OneDrive for Business sync client.

Microsoft has also improved the OneDrive for Business browser interface:

”A highlight of the new browser experience is the ability to switch between a list and preview tile view which makes it easy to identify key files. All of the key actions you want to take on a file or folder, such as preview, edit, share and delete, are conveniently located on the toolbar or by right-clicking a specific file or folder. This new browser experience makes managing your work files easier than ever. ”

In addition, the iOS OneDrive app will receive some improvements as well:

There’s a new streamlined way to trigger common actions on files (share, move, delete and details) simply by pressing and holding on the file you want to use. We’ve also added PDF annotations – the ability to draw, highlight and comment on your PDF files – directly in the OneDrive app.

How to back up your Mac before installing OS X El Capitan

Before you install El Capitan, you’re going to want to back up your computer(s), make sure you have enough free space, and check with your most-used applications to make sure they’ll be compatible. Here’s our guide for getting ready for the next version of OS X:

Once you’ve taken care of prep and backup procedures, it’s time for your computer to meet OS X El Capitan. If history is any guide, the update should become available on the Mac App Store at 10 a.m. PT, 1 p.m. ET. Here’s how to get it.

How to download and install OS X El Capitan

1. Launch the Mac App Store from your Dock (or by typing Command-Spacebar to launch Spotlight and then entering in App Store).
2. Click on the Featured tab.
3. When OS X launches, there should be a gigantic OS X El Capitan banner atop the Featured page. If you don’t see this, you can also go to the OS X El Capitan link under Quick Links and above Apps Made by Apple.
4. Click the Download or Install button underneath the OS X El Capitan icon. The installer will then proceed to download.

Do you need a boot drive?

If you’re only installing El Capitan on one computer, you can let the installer open and walk you through the process immediately. Once you install OS X, the installer deletes itself to save space (though you can always redownload it from the Mac App Store).

If you want to install El Capitan on multiple computers, however, or you’d prefer to keep your installer around in a permanent location, you may want to consider making an OS X El Capitan boot drive. Macworld has a great step-by-step guide on doing this, which I’d highly recommend reading.

Should I do a clean install?

A clean install involves wiping all data from your hard drive when you do the update, essentially returning your Mac to factory state, then restoring your personal user accounts and apps to your computer. Recent versions of OS X are great about automatically siloing potentially conflicting add-ons and outdated apps, which has made clean installs less popular over the years; in general, I’d say that unless your computer is suffering major slowdowns or acting up in some way, you shouldn’t need to follow the clean install path on your way to El Capitan.

But if you really, really want to, here’s how to go about it:

1. Back up and clone your Mac’s hard drive to an external source using third-party software.
2. Follow the instructions above for downloading OS X El Capitan and creating a bootable installer drive.
3. Boot from the installer drive, and go to Utilities > Disk Utility.
4. Erase your Mac’s hard drive using Disk Utility and reformat using Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). Once complete, quit Disk Utility.
5. Install OS X from the boot drive.
6. After the initial installation is complete, your Mac will go through the set up process. During this series of screens, you’ll see a Transfer Information to this Mac screen. From there, you’ll want to connect your external drive and restore your user account and apps from your backup.

After doing so, you should be ready to rock out with OS X El Capitan.

Apple is set to overhaul the company’s iconic store located on Regent Street, London. According to Evening Standard, Apple described the store as ”tired and outdated” in proposed plans to have Foster & Partners, the same architects responsible for the London ”Gherkin” skyscraper, revamp the interior.

Jony Ive – who had a hand in designing the recently opened Apple Store in Brussels, Belgium – will also be brought in to redesign the store, which will include the removal of the large Apple logos at the front of the building, as well as removing the glass staircase. Unfortunately, details are rather scarce on exactly how Apple will change the store, and there are no illustrations to analyze.

The company has secured permission to run operations in the basement of the store for up to three years.
