Apple takes holiday sales lead in mobile, accounts for 49 percent of activations

Apple once again took the top spot in mobile during the holiday season, accounting for just over 49 percent of activations according to mobile analytics firm Flurry. In all, Apple claimed the top spot with a share of 49.1 percent of activations, which is down slightly from its 51.3 percent share in 2014. Claiming a distant second was Samsung with a 19.8 percent share of activations, while Nokia claimed an even further third place with just a 2 percent share. Rounding out the top five were LG and Xiaomi with 1.7 percent and 1.5 percent, respectfully. Another interesting note in Flurry’s findings was that, while Phablets were very much on the rise this year, making up 50 percent of all Android activations alone, Apple’s contributions were more muted, with the iPhone 6 Plus and 6s Plus only making up 12 percent of iOS activations. Phablets in the mobile market overall, however, made up a total share of 27 percent of activations, which is up from 13 percent in 2014 and 4 percent in 2…

Apple files trademark applications for Beats 2, 3, 4, and 5

It looks like Apple has filed for a number of trademarks related to Beats, most likely related to Apple Music’s radio feature. Specifically, filings are for the word marks of B2, B3, B4, and B5, along with associated logos, which are similar to the existing Beats 1 logo, as you can see below. The applications were filed under the Beats Electronics brand, and are currently still under review. It emerged earlier this year that Apple’s deals with the record labels permit it to have up to five additional Beats radio stations, in addition to the existing Beats 1. The existing Beats station currently offers 12 hours of original live programing, with a repeat broadcast for the other half of the day. More Beats stations could offer a wider variety of music, in addition to anchor centers other than LA, New York, and London. Source: USPTO (B2, B3, B4, B5); Via Consomac (French), MacRumors …

CarPlay is coming to the Hyundai Sonata in 2016, but you’ll have to pay

It looks like Hyundai will finally be bringing Apple’s CarPlay to its vehicles with an update for the infotainment system of the 2015 and 2016 Sonata. While the vehicles already carry Google’s Android Auto system, the arrival of CarPlay is a bit later than Hyundai had originally announced. Now, Apple’s dashboard system will be available to Sonata owners in the first few months of 2016 with the purchase of an SD card with the software on it, another change from Hyundai’s original announcement. From Detroit Free Press: Hyundai says owners will have to buy an SD card with new software to get the system. That contradicts the company’s earlier assurance that the system would be a free download for customers who bought a properly equipped 2015 or ’16 Sonata midsize sedan. Hyundai already offers Android Auto in the cars for Google phone users at no additional charge. The Free Press didn’t say how much the update might cost. Hyundai’s update for Android Auto on the 2015 Sonata was f…
