Jelly smartphone review: So tiny

The company that built Jelly doesn’t claim it’s the smallest smartphone in the world. (That honor might instead belong to its predecessor, the Posh Micro X.) Rather, Jelly is touted as the world’s smallest smartphone that also includes 4G. Toss in Android 7.0, dual SIMs, a replaceable battery and a full-size headphone jack, and you start to wonder if maybe a phone that fits in your coin pocket is worth making a few sacrifices – like re-learning how to type on a keyboard the size of a matchbook. And that’s not even taking into account the bargain-basement price.

Is Jelly worth braving the hazards of Kickstarter and MediaTek processors? Is ”world’s smallest smartphone” really a title anyone should be chasing? Just how bad can a smartphone camera get, anyway? Hit the MrMobile video above and see if Jelly is a fit for the smartphone lightweight in your life (or a good second phone for the days you need to travel light)

Apple’s car project, Titan, ready to train testers

Last year Apple pivoted its Project Titan from a full-on car project to a platform designed to enable autonomous vehicles, whether they’re eventually made by Apple or a partner manufacturer or ride-sharing service. It looks like that platform is now ready for early testing.

Kif Leswing, writing for Business Insider:

The documents obtained by Business Insider include a ”Development Platform Specific Training” as well as details about an autonomous-vehicle system called the ”Apple Automated System.” Among the key training issues are instructions on how to regain manual control of an autonomous car if necessary.

According to the training packet, Apple’s self-driving car uses a Logitech wheel and pedals to actuate drive by wire, and it supports one person at a time.

The drivers, mostly Ph.D’s involved with the machine learning program, have to pass seven tests to be considered trained to, among other things, take back control of the system should they ever need to.

Titan may …

Apple starts notifying WWDC scholarship winners

Apple now is letting WWDC 2017 scholarship applicants know whether or not they have been awarded scholarship. Winners will receive a ticket to Apple’s developer conference, as well as free lodging.

The WWDC scholarship program is open to students and members of STEM organizations. In order to be eligible to a scholarship, applicants needed to submit, among other things, a Swift Playgrounds project, which was judged as part of their entry.

WWDC 2017 will take place from June 5-9 in San Jose, California. In addition to the keynote that kicks off the conference, WWDC will feature a number of technical sessions that scholarship winners and other attendees will be able to take part in.

Finally: Offline podcasts are available on Apple Watch, thanks to Overcast

Up to now, you couldn’t transfer offline podcasts to your Apple Watch to listen later when you were without a connection. Now, App Advice reports that the latest Overcast update lets you send podcasts to your Apple Watch with just a tap of a button after you’ve downloaded episodes to your iPhone.

Here’s how to transfer episodes to your Apple Watch:

Launch Overcast from your iPhone’s Home screen.
Find the downloaded episode you want to transfer.
Tap the Queue menu button (looks like ⁺≡).
Tap Send to Watch.
It’s that simple. Pending transfers will appear on the Downloads screen. It may take a minute or two for the episode to hit your watch, so just be patient.

App Advice’s Bryan M. Wolfe noticed a bit of a quirk in that your play state doesn’t sync back to your iPhone, so you can’t pick up where you left off as seamlessly, but future Overcast updates will probably fix that.

This update is on the heels of Apple’s rebranding of the Podcasts app as ”Apple Podcasts”, which …

Our iPhone addiction has turned us all into cyborgs

Very, very slow ones. But Elon Musk wants to make us faster with brain-machine interfaces. Much, much, much faster.

If you’re a fan of PayPal, Tesla, and SpaceX founder Elon Musk’s many ambitious ventures, you may have read a piece or two by Tim Urban of Wait But Why; Urban is an excellent researcher who focuses on existential, humanitarian, and scientific history — what’s happening, how did we get there, and where do we go from there.

He also decorates his lengthy articles with delightful stick figures and graphs — because sometimes you need a bit of levity in-between understanding how artificial intelligence may be the doom or savior of us all.

Urban’s latest Wait But Why opus is on Musk’s newest venture, Neuralink, which is ostensibly creating more advanced brain-machine interfaces. But before talking about that, the article deep dives into (surprisingly understandable) neuroscience concepts, including why the human brain is so difficult to map and comprehend.

How to set up two-factor authentication for your Skype account

Add an extra layer of protection to your Skype account by enabling two-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication adds an extra factor (a generated code, in this case) to your login process, so even if your account’s password is somehow discovered your account stays locked without the code. It’s a good idea to get two-factor authentication locked and loaded on any account that offers it. Skype accounts support three two-factor authentication methods: email, phone number, and authenticator app.

How to link your Skype and Microsoft accounts

After Skype was acquired by Microsoft, the service added two-factor authentication for Skype accounts linked to Microsoft. Before you enable two-factor authentication, you’ll need to link your Skype account to your Microsoft account. Follow along to learn how!

Log in to your Skype account online.
Click Account settings below your profile photo on the left side of the page.
Click Connect a Microsoft account.
