Apple introduces new API for embedding Live Photos on the web

Apple has introduced a new API for web developers based around Live Photos. LivePhotosKit JS is based in JavaScript, and makes it easier for developers to allow for the sharing of Live Photos on the web.

From Apple:

This new JavaScript-based API makes it easy to embed Live Photos on your websites. In addition to enabling Live Photos on iOS and macOS, you can now let users display their Live Photos on the web.

Live Photos are already supported by some web services like Facebook and Instagram, but this API could allow them to roll out to other services much more quickly.

Debuting alongside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in 2015, Live Photos offer something more exciting than standard images. When shooting Live Photos, your iPhone captures extra movement before and after your shot, making the image seem animated.

If you’re interested in checking out LivePhotosKit JS, you can do so right here.

PSA: Yet another reason not to click on links in suspicious emails

Punycode domain names have the ability to make a URL look like a different site name, including apple.com.

The Loop recently came across a document referring to Punycode, which is a type of Unicode that uses character subsets, that could allow someone to create a domain name that would look, on the surface, like a completely different URL.

While it’s a particularly ingenious bit of trickery, you shouldn’t worry too much. You can avoid getting caught by such a scheme by manually entering site URLs instead of clicking on links from unknown sources; additionally, you should be able to trust directly navigating to a website from Google or another popular search site.

Web developer Xudong Zheng explains the vulnerability in detail on his blog how it is possible to register domains with foreign characters by converting it. He specifically calls attention to the fact that it would be possible for someone to register a URL with characters that would look like Apple’s domain, complete wit…

Tim Cook profiles Didi Chuxing’s Jean Liu for TIME 100

As part of TIME’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people, Apple CEO Tim Cook wrote about Didi Chuxing president Jean Liu. Calling her ”a disrupter”, Cook praised her and her team for their work on big data algorithms that could help improve the flow of traffic.

From TIME:

She and her team are succeeding with innovative, big-data algorithms that aim both to improve the efficiency of Didi’s service and to ease the congestion on roadways. By analyzing commuter patterns the way oceanographers track the tides, Didi may help traffic jams go the way of the flip phone.

Cook also lauded Didi Chuxing’s engagement with communities across China to be better able to serve them.

Last year, Apple invested $1 billion in Didi Chuxing, which at the time had captured around 87% of the Chinese ride-hailing market. Since then, it has been rumored that Apple may be able to use data provided by the company in its rumored project to build an autonomous vehicle.

The most adorable Apple Watch stand now comes in iPhone form

Elago’s retro Macintosh Apple Watch stand has just been upgraded to iPhone and it’s even more adorable.

You may recall a few months ago when Elago introduced the Mac Plus Apple Watch stand. We here at iMore just fell head-over-heals and some of us have one sitting on our nightstands right now. Macrumors got wind that Elago has one-upped its own product by turning that same retro Macintosh look into an iPhone stand, available for the iPhone 7, 6s, or 6 (too bad it’s not sized for the Plus models).

The stand, called the M4, is made from flexible silicon. You can slide your iPhone into the designated slot, and the screen is framed by that adorable boxy Mac Plus look.

The charging cable hides away by interlacing into the bottom and out the backside of the stand. You plug it into your iPhone, but the majority of the cable is tucked away behind the faux computer.

Imagine how cute this would look when paired with your Magic keyboard.

Elago notes that the tight-fitting slot makes it d…

Siri rumor roundup: What’s coming next!

What will Apple’s next-generation Siri voice assistant offer come WWDC 2017?

Siri… is complicated. Originally available on the App Store, Apple bought Siri, re-imagined the service, and launched it as one of the tentpole new features for iPhone 4s. Over time, Siri expanded to iPad and iPod touch, Apple Watch and Apple TV and, most recently, the Mac.

Apple has also added new features, from navigation to dinner reservations, Siri suggestions, HomeKit control, and just last year, an interface for developers. Since Siri lives on servers, Apple’s also been quietly updating it, adding everything from entirely new engines to holiday or event-themed jokes.

With iOS 11, macOS 10.13, and Apple’s updated Watch and TV platforms, all expected to be previewed at WWDC 2017 this June, the question becomes ”what’s next for Siri?”

There aren’t many rumors to round up, so I’ll list some long-standing wishes as well.

What do past Siri updates tell us about future Siri updates?

If you …
