Apple makes iWork suite free for everyone

Apple’s iWork suite, as well as iMovie and GarageBand, are now free on all iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices, not just those purchased in 2013 and later.

If you’re still using an older device, and haven’t purchased Pages, Keynote, or Numbers because it would cost you $9.99, you’re in luck. Apple has just dropped the price of it’s iWork suite to the low price of free. Plus, GarageBand and iMovie got the same treatment.

As first reported by MacRumors, Apple’s most popular software line is now listed as free in the App Store, even for older devices.

Previously, all of these apps were provided for free to customers who purchased a new Mac or iOS device, but now that purchase is not required to get the software. Many Apple customers were already likely eligible to download the software at no cost if they had made a device purchase in the last few years.

This is fantastic news for people still running older Macs, iPhones, and iPads. I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro and had to drop $30 for…

Best Strategy Games for iPhone and iPad

Test your mettle with these fantastic strategy games!

When it comes to game genres, strategy gets tagged on to a lot of games — almost like a prefix. Adventure, RPG, puzzle, you name a genre, and I’m sure someone has stuck the word strategy in front of it.

One thing is for sure; the best strategy games require you to think critically and always be two steps ahead of your opponent, making you use serious brain power to complete your objectives.

While it’s near impossible to round up a perfect list for a genre as big as this one, here are some of my favorite strategy games for iPhone and iPad.

Invisible Inc.
Star Wars: Force Arena
Clash of Clans
The Elder Scrolls: Legends
Reigns
Plague Inc
Fallout: Shelter
Ticket to Earth

Invisible Inc.

Invisible Inc. was a game that took me by complete surprise. Considering this game relies on being sneaky, I suppose that means the jokes on me.

This turn-based stealth game randomly generates levels that you need to make your way throug…

Steve Lacy produces all his music like any 18-year-old would: On his iPhone

Steve Lacy is an 18-year-old record producer who’s worked with the likes of Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole, and even netted himself a Grammy nod for producing the 2015 album Ego Death, by The Internet. A track he wrote and recorded on his iPhone even made it onto Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN.

Lacy doesn’t come up with his demos in a completely conventional way, reports Wired. At least, it’s not conventional yet. He uses his iPhone and GarageBand to lay down tracks and come up with beats. The song he played for Kendrick Lamar (”Wasn’t There”) was completely recorded on his iPhone, including the vocals, because the equipment he was using at the time ”kept screwing up”.

Lacy uses an iRig, which he can connect directly to microphones and instruments in order to lay tracks down into GarageBand. Funnily enough, he’s run into an issue with the iPhone 7’s lack of a headphone jack, according to Wired, and has had to use an older, cracked iPhone.

Lacy’s burgeoning fame in the hip-hop community and his r…

The most useful amiibo for Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

It’s dangerous to go alone, take these amiibo with you!

One of the biggest advantages you can have in the early stages of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is having an amiibo nearby. Just about every amiibo Nintendo makes will give you something in this game, unless you’re using very specific amiibo figures all you’ll get are a handful of ingredients to use in the game. If you have a bunch of amiibo, this means once a day each will give you something useful.

But to get the good stuff, the kind of epic loot drops that really give you a serious advantage in Breath of the Wild, there are a handful of special amiibo that need to be used in very specific ways. Here’s what you’re going to want to collect, organized from most useful to kinda neat to look at.

Editor’s Note — Some of the amiibo you see in this list are no longer in circulation, and will be both more difficult to track down and more expensive than the standard retail pricing for one of these amiibo figures.

Apple can have its iPhone and eat its Mac, too

Apple can keep making Macs and keep shipping iPhones. The company simply has to be honest about priorities — with customers and internally.

Watching the discussion following Apple’s Mac Pro briefing at the beginning of April has been interesting. Sometimes, extreme. It’s ranged from those who suggest Apple needs to get out of the Mac business to those who’d love nothing more than for Apple to once again double down on the highest-end of the smallest niche. The best, of course, are far more nuanced.

Neil Cybart, writing for Above Avalon:

Apple’s decision to change course and develop a new Mac Pro has received near-universal praise from the company’s pro community. While developing a new Mac Pro is the right decision for Apple to make given the current situation, it has become clear that the Mac is a major vulnerability in Apple’s broader product strategy. The product that helped save Apple from bankruptcy 20 years ago is now turning into a barrier that is preventing A…

Anker discounts its most popular Bluetooth headphones & speakers in time for warmer weather

Our friends at Thrifter are back again, this time with some big savings on various Anker Bluetooth accessories!

Over the past few weeks, winter finally gave way to spring and it’s now nice enough to enjoy workouts without being cooped up in the gym. This is the running season you should ditch those old earbuds and go wireless. I’m hesitant to spend crazy amounts on Bluetooth headphones to workout with since no matter what manufacturers say, profuse amounts of sweat and electronics don’t mix.

That’s where Anker’s SoundsBuds come in handy. They are lightweight, feature Bluetooth 4.1 (perfect for Apple Watch!) and aren’t outrageously priced. In fact, they are even less expensive today since coupon code ANKER233 drops the black, green and blue models down to $22.99 (Reg. $30). Thousands of Amazon reviewers rate them 3.8 out of 5 stars so you know they’ll hold up well. For those of you who have problems with earbuds popping out during workouts, you could give Anker’s SoundBuds NB10 a tr…

Snapchat dives head-first into AR with new World Lenses

Snapchat has introduced its new ”World Lenses”, which are essentially the filters you know and love for selfies applied to the world around you. You use the rear-facing camera to add stickers and animations, as well as quotes and other fun embellishments to your photos and videos. These filters are very much akin to the face-changing filters already in place, but they take a decidedly more augmented reality approach to quick photo and video editing.

Snapchat announced the new lenses in a blog post, in which it never actually mentioned ”AR” or ”augmented reality”, reports TechCrunch.

Snap notably doesn’t use ”augmented reality” or ”AR” once in its blog post announcing the news, preferring instead to talk about how users can ”paint the world” with ”3D experiences.” [sic]

As easy to use as the existing selfie filters, Snapchat says you just have to tap the screen and cycle through the available World Lenses. There’s no word on when World Lenses will hit the iOS app, but you can…

Ecobee4 Smart Thermostat: Everything you need to know!

Get centralized control of your home and your heating and cooling with the Alexa-enabled ecobee4.

Updated May 2017: Added Amazon’s listing for the ecobee4 smart thermostat.

Ecobee4 is now available for purchase

The cat’s out of the bag, folks, and the Alexa-enabled ecobee4 smart thermostat is very real and very awesome!

The ecobee4 comes with embedded microphones that feature far-field voice recognition (the same technology that makes the Amazon Echo hear you from across the room) and a speaker that makes Alexa sound loud and clear, despite coming from a thermostat fastened to your wall.

That means, on top of having all the same great features as the ecobee3 (HomeKit-enabled, satellite room sensors, energy-saving benefits), you can use the ecobee4 in the same way you’d use an Echo, Echo Dot, or Tap. Ask Alexa to set a timer, adjust the lighting, give you the steps to a recipe, play some jazz — you can do it all right from your smart thermostat.

Ecobee4 is available for pu…
