Why Apple might have to put Touch ID on the back of iPhone 8

From the audacious to the pragmatic. Or, how iPhones ship.

Way back in January 2015 I wrote about Apple deleting the physical Home button so the company could minimize the bezels in iPhone 8:

Imagine a future iPhone where the screen goes to the edge on both sides, disappearing not at the curve but as the curve. Imagine an iPhone where the FaceTime camera and earpiece take up almost no space, and the screen reaches almost all the way to the top. And imagine an iPhone where the Home button is replaced by some new technology that can still allow for a physical escape to a known state, that can still scan fingerprints and authenticate, but that also lets the screen reach almost all the way to the bottom.

In essence, give people bigger screens without having to give them bigger phones to go with them. Turns out, we got a version of that first with iPhone 7. A non-physical Home button that looked and felt, and forced bezel space, just like the previous one. Back then, though, it fel…

Nintendo announces new Neon Yellow Joy-Con controllers!

Nintendo announces a new paint job and a new accessory for the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers!

Photo: Nintendo of America

If you’re getting bored of your gray, blue, and red Joy-Cons, Nintendo announced new Neon Yellow Joy-Cons are coming soon!

The new colored Joy-Cons (pictured above) will be made available on June 16th, 2017 to coincide with the launch of ARMS —the colorful arena boxing/fighting game.

That’s not the only upgrade the Joy-Con controllers are receiving as Nintendo revealed an attachable battery grip for the Joy-Cons (pictured above) to extend their battery life. No exact word on pricing or how much extra battery life the Joy-Cons will receive using the battery grips — which are powered by 2 AA batteries — but we do know they will also be released on June 16th along with ARMS.

Personally, I’m honored that Nintendo decided to go yellow in solidarity with iMore, but the Neon Yellow is a little too green looking for …

Class up your iPhone with 30% off Nomad’s entire lineup of Horween leather cases

Our friends at Thrifter are back again, this time with an exclusive 30% discount on Nomad leather iPhone cases!

I’ve been using a leather case on my iPhone 7 Plus since launch day. I love the contrasting look of a super industrial, almost cold feeling item being wrapped in an organic, warm material. Some of the best leather case options on the market today are made by Nomad. We’ve partnered with the California-based accessory maker to bring Thrifter readers an exclusive 30% discount on its entire leather case lineup, including the new Midnight Blue colorway. Prices start at just $27.97 with free shipping when you enter coupon code THRIFTER30 at checkout.

All 3 styles leverage USA-sourced Horween leather for a finish that ages beautifully. I prefer Nomad’s regular leather case to the official Apple option because instead of having an open bottom, it wraps around the corners and around the speakers for added protection. Nomad’s leather folio wallet and case wallet styles are ideal fo…

Making the iPad Pro feel like paper will take more than a screen protector

A new Kickstarter claims to help improve the feel of Pencil on your iPad Pro, but it’s a quick fix to a bigger problem.

One of the only nitpicks I have about my iPad Pro and Pencil is the feel of drawing on the glass screen: While the Pencil is the best stylus I’ve ever used on the iPad by a large margin, it still suffers from a much slicker drawing experience than true paper and pencil.

Jury-rigging the stylus experience

At its core, this is a scientific problem. Rubber or hard plastic on glass is going to produce a different feel than a nib on paper, and though companies can tweak their nibs slightly to improve the experience with greater drag, it’s a hotfix: What might be the perfect amount of drag for one person may prove too sticky or frustrating to work with for another.

Before the Pencil came on the scene, this is why users had such a wide array of capacitive nibs to choose from: Certain folks preferred the feel of a sleek fabric nib, while others wanted the ultra-d…

Touch ID not working while charging your iPhone? Here’s the fix!

Why doesn’t Touch ID unlock your iPhone when the device is charging? It could relate to many different issues, but we have a surefire way to solve one such problem.

Whenever I visit my dad’s home for an extended period of time, I often drop my iPhone 7 Plus on his kitchen counter and plug it into his charger, which he leaves plugged in. After following this routine on a few separate occasions, I noticed that my Touch ID frequently wouldn’t unlock the device while it was connected to his charger. At first, I thought it was just some goofy glitch, and I simply tapped in my password instead of using Touch ID. That worked. No biggie.

Over time it occurred to me that if I unplugged my iPhone from the charger before trying to use Touch ID to unlock it, I never experienced the problem. However, if I left it plugged in and tried to use the fingerprint sensor, nothing happened. No Touch ID error, nothing. The sensor just froze up and didn’t work.

I like to think I’m pretty smart (or as s…

Best apps for filing your taxes right on your iPhone or iPad

Today is the last day you can file your taxes in the U.S. without suffering a late penalty! If you’re not sure where to start, check out these apps that let you prepare your taxes right on your iPhone or iPad!

The tax deadline is fast approaching, so you need to file quickly. Luckily, there are some awesome apps that let you file right from your iPhone or iPad. Though these apps are free to download, all the ones that allow you to e-file will require an in-app purchase.

See? It doesn’t have to be painful at all.

Note: We will note that arguably, you shouldn’t need specialized tax software or companies to prepare your taxes — the U.S. government has entertained several proposals throughout the years to simplify its tax code, but lobbyists from the top tax prep companies have spent millions of dollars to squash those plans to save their own bottom line. This isn’t necessarily an argument against using these services — many of iMore’s U.S. writers still use the…
