Next Ten Words 29: Follow the Mac Pro money, with Nilay Patel

Beyond the soundbites, these are the Next Ten Words.

Apple held a special summit to get word out about an all-new, all-modular Mac Pro… coming next year. But what did Apple know and when did they know it? Gartenberg, Ritchie, and special guest Nilay Patel of The Verge go beyond the soundbite with the Next Ten Words.

Also: Yes, the podcast has a new name. It’s based, of course, on a reference from The West Wing.

How to set up Family Sharing on iPhone and iPad

Family Sharing lets your entire family share purchases from iTunes and the App Store without having to share the same Apple ID.

With Family Sharing, you can not only share all your iTunes and App Store purchases with your family, but you can set it so that parents require that younger children ask permission before purchasing content. You can then receive a request and either accept or deny it right from your own iPhone or iPad. Here’s how to get started.

What you need to know about Family Sharing

Family Sharing lets you add up to six family members. All the devices must be running iOS 8 or above in order to work. Once added, you get instant access to each other’s purchases and can view and download them on demand just as you already can from your own account. However, every purchase made from that point forward will then be charged to the family organizer’s iTunes account, so keep this in mind. The only exception to this is if the individual iTunes account has enough store credit…

How to save and share videos from the Clips app

How do you save and share all the videos you make in Clips? With the Share Sheet, of course!

If a video stays in the editor, is it ever really seen? Luckily, Apple’s new Clips app makes it so easy to save and share your videos, you’ll never have to find out.

How do you save your Clips to your Photos library?

If you don’t want to share a video just yet, but want to have it in your Library, ready and waiting, you can render out a copy. It flattens the file, so you can’t go back to the original in Clips later, but you can load it up into any video editor and use it in other projects.

Note: iMovie has its own share extension, so if you want to edit in iMovie, use Import with iMovie instead.

Tap the Projects button.
Tap on the Project you want to save.
Tap on the Share button (looks like a square with an arrow shooting up out of it.)
Tap on Save Video.
Tap on OK to finish.

Depending on the length of your video, it might take a moment or two to render.

Best Touch ID apps for the 2016 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar

You can use your fingerprint to lock and unlock private information in Mac apps thanks to Touch ID on the 2016 MacBook Pro.

I’ve been in love with Touch ID on the 2016 MacBook Pro since the day I laid my hands (literally) on it. Touch ID makes logging into password-protected content, like making music purchases in iTunes and unlocking my screen, easy, convenient, and totally awesome. I want Touch ID on all my Macs.

Unfortunately, app support for Touch ID is very limited. I haven’t even found a single finance app that offers Touch ID support, and that seems like a no-brainer. I’ve only found a handful of apps with Touch ID on the Mac — that is, apps that allow you to use your fingerprint to lock and unlock either content in an app or the app itself. Below are the best of what’s currently available. If you have a favorite Mac app that supports Touch ID on the 2016 MacBook Pro, please let us know in the comments.
