Chevy Bolt EV test drive: It’s electric!

Green is all the rage; not the color (I’m more of a blue guy myself), but instead the enviro-friendly type. There are few consumer goods more environmentally taxing than cars; considering how many are always on the road churning out smog, combined with fluctuating prices at the gas pump, it’s little wonder that electric cars are getting all the attention these days. And it’s not just hip new outfits like Tesla having all the fun; old American standards like Chevy are also seizing the chance to go green with EVs of their own. Last year I had the chance to test drive the Volt, Chevrolet’s half-electric Plug-In Hybrid – and today, I finally got to take its sibling for a spin. The star of today’s video is the Chevy Bolt EV, the vehicle that Chevrolet promises will ”reinvent” the electric car.

My name is Michael Fisher, but my drag name is MrMobile (that’s drag racing – sorry RuPaul fans). This video is a brief glimpse at the Chevy Bolt EV, filmed after about five hou…

What Apple’s big three have to say about the future of the Mac Pro

Apple recently spilled the beans about working on the next Mac Pro. Read what was said in this exclusive meeting, verbatim.

Three Apple executives, Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing; Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering; and John Ternus, Vice President of Hardware Engineering, and Apple PR representative Bill Evans recently held a secret(ish) meeting with just five journalists to talk about the Mac. More specifically, a new component-based Mac Pro coming sometime soon, but ”not this year.” Today, TechCrunch, also in attendance at this exclusive meeting, published the transcripts for all of us to read.

You may recall that iMore Editor in Chief Rene Ritchie has, on numerous occasions, called attention to the fact that Apple hasn’t updated the Mac Pro since 2013, which is a painful thing to realize when you take into account that Apple also sealed up said 2013 Mac Pro so tightly that it is essentially an …

Apple Watch Series 3 rumor roundup: Everything you need to know

We may well get a new Apple Watch this fall — if so, here are the rumors and speculation you need to know about now.

Updated May 24, 2017: According to DigiTimes, Apple is looking to begin a trial production run of micro-LED displays by the end of this year.

Apple Watch Series 2 debuted in September of 2016 but, as is my wont, I’m already thinking about the next version. What will it look like? What new features will it have that pique my fancy?

Don’t get me wrong: I love my current Apple Watch. The Series 2 offered huge battery improvements for both 38mm and 42mm users, and I use it to track my workouts and respond to notifications almost every day. But if I had my druthers, I wouldn’t mind seeing an updated Series 3 later this year.

May 15, 2017: Apple is rumored to be including glucose monitoring and smart bands, offering additional features, in an upcoming Apple Watch

A non-invasive glucose monitor has been rumored for Apple Watch for a while but a new report…

Five tips to make your Clips extra lit

Clips has a lot of depth but there are a few pointers worth sharing right up front!

As part of the review process, I’ve had the opportunity to use Apple’s new video app, Clips, for almost a week. In that time I’ve figured out a few tips that have helped me get better video done faster, with half the stress and twice the fun!

1. Experiment!

Almost everything in Clips is non-destructive, so don’t be afraid to try out Live Titles, filters, and overlays. If you don’t like what you get, simply hit the appropriate button and switch to something different — or switch it off entirely. Also, don’t be shy. Filters are like sunglasses: They can cover up a lot of awkward at the beginning!

Here’s how to test ’em out:

Tap on the Clip you want to change.
Tap the Effects button (looks like a star), top middle.
Tap the Effect you want to switch to.

2. Extended your emoji

When you go to add an overlay, Clips only gives you the option to insert your most frequently used Emoji. Since…

Encrypt your family: Sending safer, smarter messages

I just wanted my family’s messaging habits to be a little more secure. And the move was easier than I expected.

Nothing scares a parent more than letting their kid roam free — even just a little bit — online. I’m under no illusions that my daughters won’t run into something nefarious at some point, be it adult content, or a phishing scheme, or cyber-bullying. For the most part that’s all part of growing up. It’s just digital now, wherein back in my day (get off my lawn!) it was almost all analog.

Those are all things I can help educate against, though. Same goes for the basics — like having good password security.

What I can’t do anything about is the bad actors out there. True sniffing and hacking and what not. While I’m not quite ready to explain VPNs to my family, I have taken a couple of steps that should at least make things a little harder on anyone who targets us. (And, I’d argue, taking little steps instead of going full-IT on the folks y…

Apple sued by Australian regulators over bricked iPhones

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is suing Apple over a software update last year that bricked the phones of several customers who had previously had a cracked screen or Touch ID button fixed at a third-party repair shop. The ACCC seems to think that the update was at least partially issued in order to force customers into using Apple or Apple-approved repair centers.

From Reuters:

Apple engaged in ”misleading or deceptive conduct and made false or misleading representations to consumers” about its software updates and customers’ rights to have their products repaired by the company, the commission said.

The ACCC is seeking fines and injunctions against Apple, and wants the company to be made to partake in a compliance program so something like this doesn’t happen.

This lawsuit likely stems from an issue that was seen last year known as ”Error 53”, which cropped up in a particular update to iOS 9. The error made iPhones that had been repaired by third …
