Radeon Pro Vega 56 vs. Vega 64: Which iMac Pro video card is better?

The iMac Pro comes with two Radeon Pro graphics card options. But which should you pick?

Despite its all-in-one nature, you can still customize most of your iMac Pro before it ever leaves the assembly line. Whether you want to upgrade your processor, RAM, storage, or accessories, Apple has a few options for you.

That includes graphics cards. While you still can’t get an NVIDIA card (with all its CUDA glory) built into your iMac Pro, you will be able to choose from two of AMD’s top-tier graphics cards: The Radeon Pro Vega 56, or the Vega 64.

Both cards are powered by AMD’s Vega architecture, allowing for up to 11 teraflops of single-precision and 22 teraflops of half-precision computing. Add that to the Vega’s High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2), and you’ll be looking at higher frame rates on games, faster graphics rendering, and silky-smooth operation of the iMac Pro’s 5K Retina P3 display.

Both cards will perform well for most users, but there are small tweaks that can benefit certain …

Akita Might Be the Smartest Investment For Any Smart Home

Keep your home protected from IoT invasions and hacks with Akita!

We’re at a crossroads — smart home products have never been more affordable and accessible to the general public, but at the same time, they’re often unsecure and most connected devices are susceptible to attacks. Criminals have caught onto this trend and smart home hacks are on the rise. What can we do to secure our IoT products?

Fortunately, there are folks working to combat those hackers with ingenious new devices like the Akita.

What does the Akita do? Simply plug this little device into a LAN port on your router and the Akita will scan your network for any unusual activity and immediately shut things down if it notices any hackers or malicious programs running on your network. It will then notify you that an attempt was made. You wouldn’t want hackers to access any of the sensitive information stored on your connected devices, so Akita does all the policing for you passively. You won’t know it’s there u…

How to score the Expert Handler bonus in Pokemon Go

The best way to guarantee a little extra Stardust.

The single biggest reason to use that new AR+ mode in Pokemon Go right now is the Expert Handler bonus. Like throwing a curveball or nailing a Great or Excellent throw, this new bonus adds to the reward you get when a Pokemon is caught. Specifically, you get a bonus to your XP and a bonus to the amount of Stardust collected from the capture.

Stardust is the most valuable resource in the game, so by design it is always in short supply. That makes being able to score some extra Stardust on each catch a big deal, so here’s how you make sure you nail that Expert Handler bonus every time!

Slow and Steady

When a Pokemon first appears in AR+ mode, there’s a small indicator circle near its head. This is the Awareness meter, and it fills up as the Pokemon becomes aware of your existence. When it fills, it flashes red and the Pokemon could attempt to flee from you before you get a chance to throw.

In order to score the Expert Handler bo…

How to turn off AR+ mode in Pokemon Go

If you’re not excited by the bonus Stardust, you can probably go without this new gameplay mode.

A new feature showing up in Pokemon Go is frequently cause for celebration, but not everything appeals to everyone. This is especially true of the new AR+ mode for catching Pokemon. It takes a moment to set up, doesn’t work exactly the same way everywhere, and makes you look a little on the silly side if you’re trying to play in a public place.

These are the best places to use AR+

It’s not for everyone, which is why Niantic included multiple ways to disable the feature in the Pokemon Go app. Here’s how they work!

In the capture screen

When trying to toss a PokeBall, there’s a small toggle in the upper-right corner of the screen labeled ”AR+” and you can use that to turn this new feature on or off. If the toggle is on the left, the feature is off. If the toggle is on the right, you’ll see the camera in the background of your app because the feature is on.

This is the easiest way to j…

The best places to use AR+ mode in Pokemon Go

You aren’t going to use this everywhere.

Niantic is using all the power of Apple’s ARKit to make catching things in Pokemon Go a lot more fun. The new AR+ feature lets you sneak up and score some bonus Stardust and XP if you do it right, but it’s not really designed to be used everywhere. There will be places where you are going to want to tap that AR+ toggle to turn this feature off, and return to the fully animated method of catching Pokemon.

Choosing where to use AR+ can be a bit confusing, but here’s a quick rundown of all the places we’ve tested it so far.

Parks and Playgrounds are best

Any wide open space, especially where there’s a big field or grassy area, is perfect for AR+ in Pokemon Go. The app functions best when the phone can easily ”find” the ground and make some virtual Tall Grass appear. It also looks a little more natural, which helps make everything feel a little more real.

You don’t necessarily need the grassy area to be super flat, but playing on the side of …

Tips for using Portrait Mode with Christmas lights

Make your holiday photos stand out with Portrait Mode.

For some people, Portrait Mode has changed the way they use their iPhones to take photos. It’s the kind of thing that encourages you to think a little differently about how you are composing a shot, instead of just pointing and shooting. That’s a really cool thing to have as an option. There are plenty of great photos to come from this feature, as well as a few misses while Apple improves things in the background, but Christmas lights add both a fun background and a unique challenge in using this camera mode.

Here are a few quick tips on using Portrait Mode successfully when Christmas lights are around.

Don’t forget about foreground lighting

If there are a ton of very pretty Christmas lights behind the people you are taking a photo of, that can occasionally mean there’s not a ton of light shining on their faces. That means the phone has to work extra hard to make the faces brighter in order to get the shot, which can either m…
