Apple wants to unify iPad, iPhone, and Mac apps – but will it work?

Unifying your platform is hard. Apple has some advantages, but it is also far behind when compared to Microsoft.

Microsoft was both lauded and derided for its Universal Windows Platform (UWP). UWP is meant to give developers a way to share code and resources easily between app projects, making it easier to target different hardware like phone, PC, tablets, and Xbox.

UWP is not a ”write once, deploy everywhere” model, though in some ways it can be used as such. Nor is it only about phones, which apparently are on the sideline now for Microsoft. UWP is about building a next-generation app platform that can quickly adapt to new hardware paradigms, whether it is Windows Mixed Reality, traditional PCs, tablets, mobile devices, or your living room.

In a new report from Bloomberg, Mark Gurman, a writer who is well known for his accurate Apple leaks, details how the company is attempting to combine ”iPhone, iPad and Mac apps to create one user experience.”

Let’s talk about what that mean…

MrMobile spent $1950 on the L16 Camera (so you don’t have to)

The very first time I laid eyes on the Light L16 camera, I knew I had to test it. Sixteen individual 13MP sensors ranging from 28mm to 150mm, laid out in a scattershot pattern without even the pretense of adhering to a grid, festooned with steerable mirrors that wiggled and warbled as they fixed those big mechanical eyes on a subject … it was the perfect mix of oversized smartphone and terrifying Matrix robo-spider. I snapped one up as soon as it went on sale.

Unfortunately, I very quickly encountered many of the problems I’d read about – all of which trace themselves back to the core promise of the product. Light calls the L16 the ”camera of the future,” and given its potent mixture of cutting-edge technology and the hefty $1950 price tag, I expected nothing less. Sadly, though, the photos the L16 delivered fell far short of the pictures kicked out by my Pixel 2 XL – disappointments which continued even after a software update and a trip through …

Going digital: How to turn your music, movie, and book atoms into bits!

How do you replace all your old physical media — your music, newspapers and magazines, books and comics, movies and TV shows, with shiny, new, space-saving bits? More easily than you might think!

Too. Much. Stuff. That’s how I felt. trapped by shelves full of DVDs and Blu-Rays. Piles of magazines and books. Boxes of comics and graphic novels. Stacks of old CDs and cassettes (ask your parents!). And I wanted out. I needed out. Sure, physical objects are magnificent and there’s something about the glint of an optical disc, the smell of paper and ink, the crinkle of covers, that’s compelling and real in a way no digital content could ever be. But physical objects take up space both physically and mentally, and de-cluttering yourself from them — that can be the best, most liberating feeling of all.

Over the last few years I’ve been deliberately reducing the amount of stuff I own. This year, I’m moving and that’s drastically accelerated the process. There’s nothing…

If you’ve just picked up a new iMac Pro, chances are you already have a suite of software you rely on for your work. But if you’re curious as to what else is out there for pro users, I’ve put together some of the best apps for pro work in various disciplines.
