More investors jump on the overcrowded ’Apple is doomed’ bandwagon

”Think about Apple as a blue-chip of yesterday, as opposed to a blue-chip of tomorrow-the worst kind of investment because all the good news is priced into the stock, while the bad news is not.”

What you need to know

Despite consistent, record-breaking gains in 2020, some investors remain unconvinced by AAPL.
One investor pegged Apple when asked to name a widely held company that worried her.
Elsewhere, Rosenblatt Securities warned that the market was ”too enthusiastic” about the upcoming 5G cycle and that the iPhone SE 2 would cannibalize sales of iPhone 7 and 8.

Despite Apple’s record-breaking 2019, and its continued growth in 2020, some investors remain unconvinced by the prospect of AAPL.

In two separate reports today, January 24, two investors warned of Apple’s upcoming struggles, and possibly its impending doom. First, Rosenblatt Securities’ Jun Zhang actually raised his AAPL target price by $100, to $250…

Until now, Zhang’s AAPL target price was only $150 a share, les…

Apple Arcade has me reaching for my iPhone rather than my Nintendo Switch

Apple Arcade has reignited my love for mobile gaming.

Mobile gaming has always been a bit of a mixed bag. While the idea of having access to thousands of games on my iPhone through the App Store has always appealed to me, finding quality games that were worth my time and money was incredible hard. Not to mention the free-to-play model is so prominent in mobile developing that playing a game you really love can eventually become frustrating to play unless you decided to consistently spend money. The good news is, this has all changed with the release of Apple Arcade.

When Apple Arcade launched in September 2019, I immediately fell in love with the service and it made gaming on my iPhone a truly enjoyable experience.

Game on!

Unlimited games, one price

Apple Arcade has over a hundred premium games with more added regularly each week. There is something here for everyone, and it only costs $5 a month for all you can game!

WSJ report estimates Apple TV+ has 33.6 million US subscribers

Everyone who bought an iDevice after September 10 got a year’s free subscription…

What you need to know

A Wall Street Journal article has hinted at estimates about Apple TV+ subscriber figures.
According to data from Ampere Analysis, Apple TV+ has an estimated 33.6 million subscribers.
Those figures would put it ahead of both Hulu (31.8 million) and Disney+ (23.2 million).

A Wall Street Journal story regarding Amazon Prime content includes data that estimates Apple TV+’s subscriber count to be around 33.6 million users, putting it ahead of both Hulu and Disney+.

The report as picked up by John Gruber over at Daring Fireball, was actually about how roughly two-thirds of the content on Amazon Prime is user-uploaded, and as a result quite sketchy.

Buried in the report, however, was a graphic alluding to the number of distinct titles on each platform. The second half of that graphic contained Q4 2019 US customer base estimates by service. The figures are as follows:

Why you still can’t watch 4K YouTube on Apple devices

It’s 2020 and I still can’t watch 4K YouTube on almost any of my Apple stuff. Why?

On my Apple TV, iPad, Safari on Mac, I can watch 4K almost everything, from iTunes to Netflix to Disney+ to Vimeo… just not YouTube. And I can watch 4K YouTube on almost everything else, from Roku to Amazon to ChromeCast, just not my Apple stuff.

So, why, and more importantly, when’s it all just going to be fixed?

When standards and companies collide

The short answer is that, unlike HD where pretty much everyone supported H.264 for video encoding and decoding, 4K has been split between almost everyone, including Google, supporting H.265 aka HEVC, and YouTube, supporting only a competing codec, VP9.

Since YouTube won’t support HEVC and Apple won’t support VP9, their shared users and customers — us — well, we get screwed right in the middle.

The good news is, the next, next-generation codec, AV1, seems to be supported by just about everyone again, including Apple and YouTube. So, once we g…
