What's new in macOS Monterey:

June 16, 2022: Apple releases new macOS Monterey 12.4 build for M2 Macs

Apple has released a new build of macOS Monterey 12.4 that is designed for the upcoming Macs with its new M2 processor. The build, number 21F2092, is only needed for the new Macs so users with non-M2 Macs (which is everyone right now) will not see a prompt for an update.

The new build will first be used by the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with M2, which will be available for preorder tomorrow. The new MacBook Air, which will also use the M2, is expected to release in July.

How to download and install macOS updates

1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your Mac's screen.

2. Select System Preferences from the drop-down menu.

   

3. Click Software Update.

4. Click Update Now next to the macOS update.

   • Your Mac will need to restart after the download has been installed, so make sure you save your progress for any program you are currently working in.

   

How to turn on automatic updates

You don't have to manually update macOS every time a new one launches. You can turn on automatic updates and it will download in the background.

1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your Mac's screen.

2. Select System Preferences from the drop-down menu.

   

3. Click Software Update.

4. Tick the box for Automatically keep my Mac up to date.
