Glitch causes Apple to miscalculate usage statistics for its News app

Publishers delivering content through the Apple News app may have been getting erroneous usage figures. Apple's SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue told the The Wall Street Journal yesterday that a glitch caused the company to miscalculate the number of people using the service, which made its debut with iOS 9. The issue went unnoticed as Apple was working on adding features to the app.

Says Cue:

We're in the process of fixing that now, but our numbers are lower than reality. We don't know what the right number is.

Cue also stated that he was pleased with the growth achieved by the service, saying that it "scaled very fast…but it doesn't mean we don't all want more." The executive mentioned that over 40 million people have used News thus far, which counts major publications like The Atlantic, Business Insider, the New York Times, Time, Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.

With Apple News, publishers retain 100 percent of the proceeds from ads rolled out by them, or 70 percent of the revenue made from the iAd service. Cue said that Apple will be rolling out a self-service ad-buying feature by the end of the quarter.
