How to create Friend groups on Apple Watch

You can group your friends into categories to access them quicker on Apple Watch.

Apple Watch makes it easy for you to access your favorite contacts by simply pressing the side button. But just because the Friends button only shows you 12 contacts doesn't mean you're only limited to 12 total on your Apple Watch: You can create as many groups of friends and family as you want. Plus, you can group them into customizable categories, including "Best Friends," "Work Mates," and the like.

You have to create Friend groups using the Watch app on the iPhone, but once your groups of Friends lists are set, you can access them from the Side button on your Apple Watch. Here's how.

How to create a Friend group on Apple Watch

I know, nobody wants to be labeled. But, wouldn't it be so much easier to find people in your contacts if they were separated by categories? You can create groups of friends for your Friends list via the Watch app for Apple Watch.

  1. On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Friends.
  3. Tap Group Name at the top of the screen.

  4. Enter a name for the group.
  5. Tap the plus (+) icon in the center of the screen.
  6. Find a contact you wish to add.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you've added up to 12 contacts per group name.

The changes will automatically appear on your Apple Watch.

How to add a new friend group on Apple Watch

You may only be able to have 12 contacts in one group, but you can have as many groups as you like: Build one for your basketball buddies, your family, and any other social circles you want. You can create new groups using the Watch app on your iPhone.

  1. On your iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Scroll down and tap Friends.
  3. Swipe to the left to start a new group.

  4. Tap Group Name at the top of the screen.
  5. Enter a name for the group.
  6. Tap the plus (+) icon in the center of the screen.
  7. Find a contact you wish to add.
  8. Repeat steps 3 though 7 until you've added all of the groups you want.

Contacts can't be added to multiple groups — if your best friend is also your basketball buddy, you can't have that person in both groups; you'll have to choose one. (For the sake of your friendship, it had better be the right choice — although, unless you let your friend peek at your watch, they'll never know whether you've categorized them as "Best Buds" or "Animal Noises".)

How to access friend groups on Apple Watch

Once you've created all of the friend groups you want, you can easily find them on Apple Watch for a quick phone call, text message, or a more personal Digital Touch note.

  1. On Apple Watch, press the Side button.
  2. Swipe to the left to switch to a different group.
  3. Tap the contact you wish to call or send a message to.

When swiping though your groups, the group name will only appear for about a second before being replaced with whatever contact is currently selected.
