How to highlight with Apple Pencil in iBooks

With Apple Pencil, you can highlight in iBooks as you go. It's quick, it's easy — and it's the way it's meant to be!

You can now use Apple Pencil as a highlighter in iBooks on iPad Pro. It doesn't work with PDFs yet, just actual iBooks (ePub), but it's incredibly quick, incredibly easy, and incredibly natural — especially for anyone who has ever highlight a real textbook with a real highlighter!

How to highlight passages of text with Apple Pencil in iBooks

  1. Open the iBooks app.
  2. Select a book.

  3. Find a passage of text.
  4. Place your Apple Pencil on the first word of the sentence.
  5. Drag the Apple Pencil across the passage to highlight it.

How to change the color and style of highlight in iBooks

Once you have highlighted a passage of text, you can change the color or style, which is useful if you color-code your annotations.

  1. Open the iBooks app.
  2. Select a book.
  3. Tap the highlighted passage of text.
  4. Tap the color icon in the far left on the options menu. It looks like multicolored discs.

  5. Tap the new color. Or, tap the red underline.
  6. To exit the options menu, tap anywhere on the screen.

How to add notes to highlighted passages in iBooks

If you have a thought about the passage you've just highlighted, you can add a note. Notes can be viewed right on the page it was originally written, or from the Notes section.

  1. Open the iBooks app.
  2. Select a book.
  3. Tap the highlighted passage of text.
  4. Tap the Note icon in the middle of the options menu. It looks like a comic word bubble.

  5. Type your thoughts.
  6. To exit the options menu, tap anywhere on the screen.

How to view highlighted passages in iBooks

Want to look up the passages of text you highlighted? You don't have to flip from page to page looking for them. They are all listed in one convenient spot.

  1. Open the iBooks app.
  2. Select a book.
  3. Tap the center of the screen to call up the iBooks tools.

  4. Tap the menu icon in the upper left corner of the screen next to Library.
  5. Tap Notes.

All of your highlighted passages, and any comments you added to them, are listed in page order.
