iOS 10 announced with a richer lock screen, Siri enhancements, and much more

iOS 10 has made its official public debut at WWDC 2016. The update will bring along a number of enhancements, including to the lock screen and notification experience, Siri, and more.

Of note in iOS 10 is the redesigned lock screen experience. Notification on the lock screen will be richer, offering a deeper experience and quick interactions via 3D Touch. There will also be a number of improvements to Siri, including the introduction of a Siri SDK.

The new QuickType feature leverages Siri Intelligence for smarter typing. Siri will also be smarter about responses in Messages. Asking "Where are you?" offers to share your location with your friend, while "What is John's email?" will search through your contacts.

iOS 10 will allow you to intelligently schedule events by pulling data from Messages, calendar availability, recent addresses, from browsing in other apps, and more. iOS 10 also offers facial recognition support in photos. These smart features offer multilingual support.

In addition, iOS 10 will feature a completely redesigned News app. Along with a new design, the "For You" section will be broken up into new categories, including: Top stories, Trending, Topics You Follow, smart topic suggestions, and featured Stories hand-picked by editors. You can also now subscribe to publishers like Nat Geo, Wall Street Journal and more.

Maps is another app that will see a redesign. The redesigned app will make it easier to access the controls and details that you need by adding traffic information, Proactive results and more. Maps will also now be open to developers, allowing you to do things like request an Uber or make a reservation through Open Table without leaving the app.

Following this theme of redesign is Apple Music, which will also feature a brand new look. The new design is meant to be more intuitive, with the first tab featuring a simple selection of playlists, artists, albums, and songs. There's also a new Downloaded tab that's only for locally-stored music. Each section has seen a facelift, making for much easier navigation. Also included are lyrics, so you can now sing along with your favorite songs as you rock out!

Fans of HomeKit devices will also have a brand-new app to look forward to called Home. This will be your new home for controlling all of your HomeKit accessories. Home will also be accessible right from the Control Center in iOS 10.

The Phone app is getting a bit of an overhaul as well, with a number of new features. The app will now include voicemail transcriptions, as well as a new extension API for caller ID to help fight spam. Likewise, developers will have access to a VOIP API, which integrates with contacts and gives incoming VOIP calls an answer lock screen.

Messages in iOS 10 is getting a bit of an update with inline web previews, quicker camera access, emoji predictions, bubble effects, hand-written messages, and digital sketches. In addition, Messages is being opened up to developers with iMessage apps. With iMessage Apps, iMessage has its own app drawer and apps. There are a ton of possibilities with this feature, including allowing users to pay others with Square Cash, send stickers from different apps and much more.

Apple also announced a number of interesting smaller features for iOS 10. People can now collaborate on the same note, and you can now view email threads as conversations. Live Photos can now be easily edited and stabilized. Apple has also incorporated differential privacy, which allows it to crowd-source learning while keeping individual user privacy secure.

Developers will also have access to a number of interesting new APIs. These new APIs include RAW photo editing, camera sensor data, Live Photos capture, Wide Color, Metal tessellation, and smart cards.

The developer preview of iOS 10 will launch today, with a public beta coming in July. The update will release to the public this fall.
