Apple reportedly opening small imaging research lab in France

Apple reportedly plans to open an imaging research center in Grenoble, France. The lab will apparently work on creating improved image sensors, along with image capture techniques for iPhones and iPads.

From iPhon.fr (French, via MacRumors):

The team of 20 researchers and engineers will be able to move out of its premises located in Minatec North of the city to mount a 30 and continue the work underway, in specially equipped premises.

The research and current developments concerning the photos sensors for iPhone and iPad indicates the journal (it confirms according to our information). This will be done in partnership with STMicroelectronics, manufacturer of Italian components well established in Grenoble with several production sites.

Apple is always striving to improve the cameras in their iOS devices, and opening a small lab dedicated to these efforts is not at all surprising.
