How to use Emergency SOS on iPhone

Meet the new Emergency SOS feature

There is a new feature coming to iOS that I hope you never have to use, but if you ever do, it's good to know it's there. Emergency SOS has popped up in the iOS 10.2 beta and it helps you to make Emergency calls.

How it works

Emergency SOS allows you to call emergency services in your region by rapidly pressing the Sleep/Wake button on the side of your iPhone five times. This allows you to call 911 (or the emergency number in your area) without even having to take your iPhone out of your pocket.

Once you have activated Emergency SOS, your iPhone will sound an alarm and give you a three second countdown, that way you have a chance to cancel it if it was accidentally triggered. After the three seconds, your iPhone will make the call automatically.

How to turn off Emergency SOS on iPhone

If you're concerned that you will accidentally set off Emergency SOS and would prefer that your Sleep/Wake button doesn't have the power to make emergency calls you can always turn it off.

  1. Launch the Settings app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Emergency SOS.
  4. Tap the Click Sleep/Wake to Auto Call On/Off switch. When the switch is grey that means the feature has been disabled.

How to turn off the countdown sound on iPhone

Heaven forbid you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to make an emergency call in silence, but if you ever are, or if you just hate the blaring alarm during the Emergency SOS countdown, you can turn it off at anytime.

  1. Launch the Settings app from your Home screen.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Emergency SOS.
  4. Tap the Countdown Sound On/Off switch. When the switch is grey that means the feature has been disabled.
