These are Apple’s top App Store and iTunes picks of 2016!

What were the best apps, games, music, movies, TV, books, and podcasts of 2016? Here are Apple's picks!

Every December Apple's App Store and iTunes editorial teams put together lists of what they believe to be the very best content of the year. That includes apps, games, music, movies, TV, books, and podcasts — everything available on Apple's digital download stores. In addition to the favorites, Apple also highlights the most popular items in each category, which is effectively a "customer's choice award" all it's own. So what were the big winners of 2016?

  • Apps: For apps, Prisma for iPhone, Sketchbook Motion for iPad, Twitter for Apple TV, and MySwimPro - Personal Swim Trainer for Apple Watch. For games, Clash Royale for iPhone, Severed for iPad, Riptide GP: Renegade for Apple TV and Field Day for Apple Watch. Most popular was Snapchat, though Pokémon Go placed as well. Minecraft: Pocket Edition was the most downloaded paid iPad app, and YouTube the top free iPad app.

  • Music: Chance the Rapper, Frank Ocean, Skepta, Christine And The Queens, Kiiara, The 1975, Kanye West, The Weeknd, and DJ Khaled all showed, and Beats 1 will be doing a countdown show on December 7. Drake, the Hamilton soundtrack, Chainsmokers, Adele, Rihanna and Frank Ocean topped the download charts.

  • Movies: La La Land, Kubo & the Two Strings, Sing Street all placed. Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Deadpool, Spotlight, and The Hateful Eight ruled the charts.

  • TV: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and Atlanta as the Late Night Rule-Breaker and Best New Comedy, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Downton Abbey were all popular hits.

  • Books: Moonglow and Evicted were the favorites. The Girl on the Train and Me Before You were in the charts, while Harry Potter dominated audiobooks.

  • Podcasts: My Favorite Murder and 2 Dope Queens topped the picks. Fresh Air from NPR, the charts.

My picks would have had some overlap with Apple's, but also some major differences. What about you? What were your favorites of 2016?
