The Apple Watch can remotely open the doors on some Volkswagen cars with new app

Some Volkswagen vehicles will soon be able to support the Apple Watch, thanks to an update to an app that will enable features like remotely opening doors and more.

The update will allow all Volkswagen cars equipped with its Car-Net system to connect to the Apple Watch app. Here's what Volkswagen says those car owners can do with Apple's new smartwatch:

Owners can keep an eye on their vehicle from afar, remotely locking* and unlocking doors and viewing the status of doors, windows and sun roof (open or closed). Finding a parked vehicle is a snap, with a map of the current vehicle location, walking or driving directions to the vehicle and the ability to honk the horn and flash the lights remotely. Customers can also receive speed and boundary alert notifications to monitor certain drivers in their households. Drivers of Volkswagen vehicles with gasoline and TDI Clean Diesel engines may remotely check their fuel level, while those driving the all-electric e-Golf will be able to check their current charge and estimated driving range, turn charging on or off and access climate control features.

The Apple Watch features will be applied soon to the Car-Net app for the iPhone. The Car-Net system is available on a number of 2014 and 2015 models of the Volkswagen Beetle, Jetta, Golf and other cars.
