What's new in tvOS 12?

Dolby Atmos

Thanks to the update to tvOS 12, your Apple TV 4K can stream audio to both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos certified speakers. For anyone with Dolby Atmos speakers, you're going to love the fluid sound you'll get from watching your favorite movies.

Zero sign-on

Apple added an even-more convenient feature to it's already convenient "single sign-on" feature. With certain supported cable providers, you'll be able to take advantage of zero sign-on. That means if you have both cable and broadband networks from the same company, you literally won't have to sign into any of your cable apps. Apple TV will recognize the network and sign you in automatically.

Zero sign-in isn't available at launch, and will only be supported on Charter Communications at first, but internet providers will be added over time.

New screensavers directly from NASA's collection

Your Apple TV is going to look a whole lot cooler when your TV is on, but not being used. New screensavers are coming to tvOS 12, and this time we're going to space.

Apple, in collaboration with the International Space Station National Lab and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, unveiled brand new aerials shot from space by NASA astronauts, so Apple TV customers can enjoy even more stunning scenes filmed in 4K HDR.

We'll also be able to actually find out where aerial screensavers are from. That beautiful cityscape that you're pretty sure is Tokyo ... now you can actually find out!

Password AutoFill using the Apple TV Remote on iOS

We all know what a pain it is to use the Siri Remote to enter our log in credentials on Apple TV. I don't know about you, but I always switch to the Remote app on my iPhone. I still have to type in the password, but it's much easier than scrolling across a long string of letter and numbers.

In iOS 12 and tvOS 12, you'll be able to take advantage of Password AutoFill on your Apple TV. It's the same feature that already exists on iOS, but for Apple TV!

When you're at a log in screen on your Apple TV, use the Remote app on your iPhone or iPad and you'll see the option to use the credentials in the suggestion bar above the keyboard.

Additionally, developers will be able to add guest sign in support for apps on Apple TV. So, if your buddy want's to sign into his YouTube account, he'll be able to use AutoFill on your Apple TV in the same way as long as he's on the same network.

Most conveniently, you can add the Remote app to Control Center for quicker access. No need to reach for the Siri Remote (which is probably lost between the couch cushions anyway). Just tap the Remote icon in Control Center and you're good to go.
