Create your own personal cloud with the $136 Synology 2-bay NAS

Home media server.

The Synology DiskStation DS218j diskless 2-bay network-attached storage device has dropped to $135.99 on Amazon. That's a match for the lowest price we've ever seen, and you'd have to go all the way back to April to see the last time it dropped that low. The NAS sells for $170 and doesn't drop from that price except for deals like this.

Of course, if two bays is not enough for the media server you want to build, the Synology DS1618+ 6-bay device is down to $599.20 right now. That's a huge drop from its $749 street price.

NAS systems let you create your own media server at home. If you have a lot of digital music and movies, you can use a NAS like this one to put all those files in a central location and access it from any system in your home. It's also a good thing to have for small businesses where multiple people might need access to the same files.

The DS218j is an entry-level NAS so it's designed for more basic use at home and as a sort of personal cloud. It has a dual-core CPU with hardware encryption and operating temperatures that range between 40 and 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Once setup, you'll be able to access the NAS from anywhere using mobile apps on iOS, Android, and Windows.

These are diskless bays, which means there's no hard drives inside. You'll need to fill them yourself. The WD Red 4TB internal hard drive is on sale right now for $99.99 from a street price around $135. You'll want a couple so you can set them up as redundant arrays for each other.
