Tim Cook: Expect to see women during this year’s WWDC keynote

Tim Cook has a surprise in store for those who will be either attending this year's WWDC or viewing it on stream. Breaking tradition, you can expect to see women during today's keynote.
While Cook teased about diversifying the conference, it's not known just how many women will play a part in today's event. Apple's CEO did – however – touch on important topics including diversity in the tech industry and how the company should do more to bring women into the fold.
In an interview with Mashable, Tim Cook talks about how the industry requires more role models:
"I think it's our fault — 'our' meaning the whole tech community. I think in general we haven't done enough to reach out and show young women that it's cool to do it and how much fun it can be. I think mostly people look up and see, 'you know, I'm like that person and I see what they can do."
Cook believes there is still much more the company can do as a whole to improve diversity and provide better opportunities for women to break way into the tech industry. Apple currently sports a 70% male workforce so there's still progress to be made. Women may make up 30% of Apple's employee base, but we rarely see said employees on-stage at the company's important events.
Things at WWDC are hoped to be a different story this year. We'll have to wait for the keynote to commence – see our live blog for all the action. One thing is for sure: Tim Cook, Apple and the tech industry as a whole are starting to consider options to battle the issue head on.
